In the 1957 rock climber Yvon Chouinard started producing climbing hardware under the name Chouinard Equipment. He went on to found Patagonia in 1973. The company is part of several environmental movements and is committed to combatting environmental concerns alongside its profit motive.
Patagonia is a major contributor to environmental groups. They commit 1% of their total sales or 10% of their profit, whichever is more, to environmental groups.
The Patagonia logo is a replication of the silhouette of Cerro Fitz Roy which Yvon Chouinard ascended in 1968.
